The Catholic community in Harare is mourning the death of Father Regis Chikuni, a priest who was killed in a hit-and-run accident while crossing the road near the intersection of Prince Edward Road and Samora Machel Avenue. His body was discovered at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary after he had been reported missing for several days.
According to police sources, Father Chikuni had no identification documents on him at the time of the accident, which complicated efforts to identify him. The Archdiocese of Harare had earlier issued a statement during Sunday Mass, informing clergy and laity that the priest was unaccounted for. Archbishop Robert C. Ndlovu requested prayers for his safe return.
Later, the Archbishop’s Secretary, Father Ephraim Murwira, announced that Father Chikuni had been found deceased at the hospital mortuary. “It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we announce the passing on of our beloved brother, Father Regis Chikuni,” the statement read. “Tragically, he was found deceased at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Hospital.”
The Archdiocese expressed comfort in the promise of the resurrection, noting Father Chikuni’s dedication to his pastoral duties and the impact he had on the community. Funeral arrangements were said to be communicated in due course.
The hit-and-run incident has raised concerns about road safety in Harare, particularly for pedestrians. Police are investigating the accident, but no arrests have been reported yet. The Catholic community and friends of Father Chikuni have been urged to come together in prayer during this difficult time.
